Our Hands if Not Yours
Documentary - 35min - 2022
Using family archives along with video footage, this documentary traces back the emigration history of a maternal line in its larger geopolitical context. This is an attempt at studying how displacement, mutating environments and generational trauma shape/reshape memory and culture. Be it collective or individual memory; memory as a survival tool, as transmission, as resistance or against forgetting. Amandine explores how these shifts occur in cycles while constantly rewriting themselves. This work first came to light while pondering on how to transmit and honor a memory, a legacy after a passing. Past and present collide to offer a larger picture, fuller portrait of a woman telling her childhood story.
